FS Doyle: Artist
Whispers of Immortality
The Entrance Gallery, 2014
Whispers of Immortality was a group exhibition of 14 artists, curated by Karen Robinson-Smith. The title was taken from the poem by TS Elliot. "The poem deals with both the physicality and the philosophy of death, dying and illness, and the artists are invited to respond to the theme using the coffin lids provided as a base for their works."
Untitled (2014) by FS Doyle is composed of remnant scraps of painted canvas, wrapped around the EnViroboard coffin lid (which is made of recycled materials) like bandages.
This piece is about the fragility of our bodies, our vulnerable flesh, and the things we do to try and preserve and repair our bodies as they succumb to death, decay and damage. Torn canvas strips symbolise skin or flesh, and the piecing together of this 'skin' creates an effect that reminds me of scarring, slashing, skin grafts or surgery.
